If you are considering enrolling in NAIT’s ESL program in Edmonton — or if you are already enrolled and want to understand how the funding and pathway work — this guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is the NAIT ESL Program?
NAIT’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program is offered through Continuing Education. It is designed for adults who want to improve their English for work, further study, or daily life in Canada.
NAIT offers 6 levels of ESL instruction:
Levels 1, 2, and 3 — Foundation Building These courses are for high-beginner to intermediate learners. They focus on building core language competencies in writing, speaking, listening, and reading. The emphasis is on practical, everyday English as well as Canadian classroom culture.
Levels 4, 5, and 6 — English for Academic Purposes These courses are for intermediate to advanced learners. They build the academic English skills needed for post-secondary study at NAIT or other institutions. The focus shifts to academic writing, advanced vocabulary, reading strategies, and formal communication.
A placement test determines your starting level. You do not choose your level — NAIT assesses your current proficiency and places you accordingly.
Program Structure and Format
Duration: Each level is approximately 15 weeks long. Semesters follow NAIT’s three-term academic calendar — Fall (September–December), Winter (January–April), and Spring/Summer (May–August).
Format options:
- Full-time or part-time
- Day or evening classes
- Online or in-person (face-to-face)
Intensive option: Starting from Winter 2025, NAIT offers an intensive ESL program for Levels 5 and 6. This intensive format is 7.5 weeks long (150 hours) and is available in person.
Short courses: NAIT also offers 20-hour workshop-style courses for students who want to focus on specific skills — academic writing, pronunciation, speaking, or listening. These are separate from the full ESL program levels.
What Happens After You Complete NAIT ESL Level 6?
Completing ESL Level 6 at NAIT opens significant doors:
English Language Proficiency for NAIT credit programs Completion of ESL Level 6 meets NAIT’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) entrance requirement for applications to most NAIT credit programs. This means you can apply directly to NAIT’s diploma, certificate, and degree programs in:
- Business (JR Shaw School of Business)
- Health Sciences
- Information Technology
- Engineering Technologies
- Trades and Apprenticeship
- Culinary Arts
- Environmental Management
Conditional admission NAIT offers conditional admission to credit programs for ESL students who are enrolled in Level 6. This means you can begin the admission process for your next program before you have officially completed your ESL studies.
The bigger picture Many students who start at NAIT in ESL Level 1 or 2 go on to complete full diploma or degree programs and build careers in Alberta’s trades, technology, and health sectors. NAIT focuses on career fields of business, IT, engineering technologies, health sciences, culinary arts, and environmental management — all sectors with strong employment demand in Edmonton and across Alberta.
Academic Upgrading — The Other FLA-Eligible Program
Alongside ESL, NAIT’s Academic Upgrading program is also eligible for FLA funding. It is a different pathway designed for a different type of student.
Who it is for: Adults who need to complete high school level coursework (grades 10–12) as prerequisites for post-secondary study or employment. This includes people who did not complete high school in Canada, or whose foreign credentials do not meet NAIT’s entrance requirements.
What it covers: Academic Upgrading courses in Math, English Language Arts, Science, and other Grade 10–12 subjects.
How it connects to ESL: Some students use NAIT’s ESL program to build their English proficiency, and then transition into Academic Upgrading to complete the academic prerequisites for their target program. The two programs can be part of the same pathway.
How FLA Funding Applies to the NAIT ESL Program
The Foundational Learning Assistance (FLA) program is the primary source of government funding for NAIT ESL students. Here is how it applies to your specific situation:
While studying ESL Levels 1–6: You are eligible to apply for FLA if you meet the government’s eligibility criteria (Canadian citizen, PR, or protected person; Alberta resident; 18+; working fewer than 20 hours/week for full-time funding).
FLA can cover:
- Your NAIT ESL tuition and fees — paid directly to NAIT
- Books and supplies — included in your first living allowance payment
- Monthly living allowance — deposited directly to your bank account
The funding is not automatic. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a capped budget. The invitation email from the NAIT Foundational Learning Team is your signal to apply — and the funding window closes within approximately 6 hours of opening.
After completing ESL and transitioning to a credit program: Once you move into a NAIT credit program (diploma, degree, certificate), you are no longer eligible for FLA — but you become eligible for Alberta Student Aid loans and grants, NAIT bursaries, and other credit-program funding options.
The Placement Test — What to Expect
Before your first class at NAIT, you must take the ESL placement test. This determines which level you start in.
What it assesses: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English.
When to take it: You can take the placement test up until one day before the enrollment deadline for your term.
What if you already have English proficiency test scores? If you have results from IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or another recognized test, email them to continuingeducation@nait.ca. NAIT may accept these in lieu of their own placement test for some programs.
Practical Tips for New NAIT ESL Students
Register as early as possible Early registration means you are in the system earlier — which is directly connected to your eligibility to receive the FLA invitation. The earlier NAIT registers you in the Government of Alberta’s Student Management System, the earlier you can receive the invitation.
Create your Alberta.ca Account immediately after enrolling The FLA online application requires a verified Alberta.ca Account. Verification takes up to 10 days. Do not wait. Create it the day you enroll.
Activate FundingNotify before the first funding window The FLA invitation email arrives without warning. FundingNotify monitors your inbox and calls your phone the moment it arrives. Setup takes 2 minutes — forward emails from @nait.ca to monitoring@fundingnotify.ca. A video guide walks you through this after signup.
Connect with your classmates early NAIT ESL classes are typically diverse — students from many different countries and backgrounds. Building a network with your classmates early creates a mutual support system for sharing information, including funding window alerts.
Know your pathway before you start Have a clear sense of what program you want to enter after ESL. This helps you stay motivated through multiple terms of language study and ensures you are taking the levels you actually need.
NAIT ESL vs. LINC — Which Is Right for You?
Both NAIT ESL and LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) offer English instruction in Edmonton. Here is how they compare:
| Feature | NAIT ESL | LINC |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Paid (covered by FLA if eligible) | Free |
| Who it is for | Anyone meeting enrollment requirements | Permanent residents and refugees who are newcomers |
| Goal | Academic and professional English | Settlement and daily life English |
| Pathway to NAIT credit programs | Yes — Level 6 meets ELP requirement | No direct pathway |
| Funded by | Government of Alberta (FLA) | Federal government (IRCC) |
| Competition for spots | Yes — FLA is first-come, first-served | No — placement-based |
The Government of Alberta recommends applying for LINC first if you are eligible and interested in ESL support. LINC is free and has no competitive funding process. NAIT ESL, when funded by FLA, is the stronger pathway for students targeting NAIT credit programs specifically.
Never Miss Your FLA Funding Window
NAIT ESL students who receive FLA funding consistently are the ones who respond to the invitation email within the first hour of the window opening. The setup to make that possible takes 2 minutes.
FundingNotify monitors your Gmail inbox for the NAIT funding email and calls your phone the moment it arrives — with a follow-up call 5 minutes later if you do not answer. You receive an SMS with the direct link to apply.
Set it up once. Never worry about missing the window again.
