If you are studying ESL or Academic Upgrading at NAIT in Edmonton, you have more financial support options than most students realize. The Foundational Learning Assistance program is the most well-known — but it is not the only one.

This guide covers all the major financial aid options available to NAIT ESL and Academic Upgrading students in Edmonton in 2026, how they work, and how to access them.

1. Foundational Learning Assistance (FLA) — The Primary Grant

What it is: A government grant from the Government of Alberta. Not a loan — no repayment required.

Who it is for: Students enrolled in ESL or Academic Upgrading at NAIT Continuing Education who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons with an Alberta address, aged 18 or older, and working fewer than 20 hours per week (for full-time funding).

What it covers:

How to access it: You must be enrolled in your program, registered in the Government of Alberta’s Student Management System by NAIT, and respond immediately when the invitation email arrives. The program operates on a strict first-come, first-served basis. The funding window lasts approximately 48 hours — and all available spots are typically claimed within 6 hours.

Lifetime maximum: 50 months of full-time training.

Sessions per year: 3 — Fall, Winter, and Spring.

The key challenge: The invitation email arrives without advance warning. Students who miss it — or see it too late — lose the funding for that session. FundingNotify solves this by calling your phone the moment the email arrives.

2. LINC — Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada

What it is: A free English language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) — the federal government.

Who it is for: Permanent residents, convention refugees, and protected persons aged 18 or older who are living in Alberta. LINC is specifically for newcomers to Canada who need to improve their English.

What it covers: Full English language instruction — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — at no cost to the student. Childcare support is also available at some locations for children between 19 months and 5 years old.

Important note for 2026: The federal government has announced that Stage II language and settlement support (Canadian Language Benchmark levels 5–8) will no longer be available after April 2026 at some institutions. LINC programming for Stage I learners (CLB 1–4) continues. Check directly with your local provider for the most current information.

Where to access it in Edmonton:

How to apply: You must first complete an English placement test at the Language Assessment, Referral, and Counselling Centre (LARCC) at Catholic Social Services in Edmonton. After the test, you receive a LINC card with your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores, which determines your level.

Important: The Government of Alberta recommends applying for LINC first if you are interested in ESL funding, before applying for FLA. LINC is completely free and has no application competition. FLA is needs-based and competitive.

3. Canada Job Grant — For Employer-Supported Training

What it is: A government program that helps employers pay for employee training. It is available through NAIT Continuing Education.

Who it is for: Employed Albertans whose employer is willing to sponsor their training costs.

What it covers: The Canada Job Grant can cover up to two-thirds of training costs, with the employer covering the remaining third.

How to access it: This requires an employer who agrees to participate. If you are currently employed and your employer is willing to invest in your English or upgrading training, this is worth exploring. Contact NAIT Continuing Education directly at ContinuingEducation@nait.ca for details.

4. NAIT Bursaries and Awards — For Credit Program Students

What it is: NAIT offers bursaries, scholarships, and awards for students in credit programs — including degree, diploma, certificate, and apprenticeship programs.

Who it is for: Students enrolled in NAIT’s credit programs. Note: most of these awards are not available to Continuing Education students (ESL and Academic Upgrading). However, once you complete your ESL or Academic Upgrading program and transition to a credit program at NAIT, you become eligible.

How to access it: Applications open in October each year through NAIT’s MyAwards Central portal. New applicants and incoming students can apply for entrance awards. Current students can apply for bursaries and awards to fund future years of study.

Why this matters for ESL students: If you complete your ESL or Academic Upgrading program and move into a NAIT credit program (trades, technology, health, business), a new range of financial support opens up. The awards available depend on your program — use the search tool on NAIT’s scholarship page to see what applies to you.

5. Alberta Adult Health Benefit — For Health Coverage

What it is: A provincial program that provides health benefits to low-income Albertans who do not have employer-sponsored health coverage.

Who it is for: Low-income Alberta residents, including students who are receiving FLA funding or who meet income thresholds.

What it covers: Basic health, dental, optical, and prescription drug coverage.

How to access it: Apply through the Government of Alberta at alberta.ca. Note that health benefits are specifically excluded from FLA — if you need health coverage while studying, Alberta Adult Health Benefit is the separate program to apply for.

6. Employment Insurance (EI) While Studying

What it is: If you are currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits and want to study at NAIT, you may be able to continue receiving EI while enrolled in an approved program.

How it works with FLA: If you are receiving regular EI benefits, you can apply for and receive FLA at the same time — until your EI claim ends. However, if you are receiving EI Special Benefits (maternity, parental, sickness, compassionate care), you are not eligible for FLA at the same time.

What to do: Notify Service Canada that you are starting a training program. Some approved training programs allow EI recipients to continue receiving benefits while studying. Contact your local Service Canada office for details specific to your situation.

The Right Order to Apply

If you are a newcomer to Canada studying ESL at NAIT, here is the recommended order:

1. Apply for LINC first — it is completely free, has no competition, and can begin immediately while you wait for FLA.

2. Enroll in NAIT ESL or Academic Upgrading — this makes you eligible for FLA.

3. Register with NAIT Continuing Education for FLA — confirm your enrollment in the Government of Alberta’s system as soon as possible.

4. Create your Alberta.ca Account now — takes up to 10 days to verify. Do not wait.

5. Activate FundingNotify — so you are alerted the moment the FLA invitation email arrives, before the funding is claimed by others.

6. Apply for Alberta Adult Health Benefit if you need health coverage — FLA does not cover this.

The FLA Timing Problem — And the Solution

Among all the options above, FLA is the most valuable for most NAIT ESL and Academic Upgrading students — because it can cover both tuition and living costs. But it is also the most competitive.

The invitation email arrives without warning. The funding window lasts approximately 48 hours. All available spots are typically claimed within 6 hours. For ESL students whose first language is not English, the email can be easy to miss or misunderstand as a routine notification.

FundingNotify was built to solve exactly this problem. Once you set up one Gmail forwarding rule — forwarding emails from @nait.ca to monitoring@fundingnotify.ca — FundingNotify monitors your inbox automatically. The moment the NAIT funding email arrives, your phone rings and you receive an SMS with the direct application link.

Setup takes 2 minutes. Done once. Works for every session — Fall, Winter, and Spring.
