One of the most important things to understand about NAIT’s Foundational Learning Assistance program is this: there are 3 funding opportunities per year.
Fall. Winter. Spring.
If you miss one window, the next one is not a year away. It is one term away. But being ready for it requires preparation that starts weeks before the window opens — not after.
This article explains how NAIT’s academic calendar connects to FLA funding, what to realistically expect in terms of timing, and exactly what you need to do — and when — to never miss your chance.
NAIT’s Three Academic Terms
NAIT structures its academic year around three terms:
| Term | Approximate Dates |
|---|---|
| Fall | September – December |
| Winter | January – April |
| Spring/Summer | May – August |
For ESL and Academic Upgrading programs through Continuing Education, NAIT offers intakes for all three terms. This means there are three separate opportunities per year to enroll in a program and become eligible for FLA funding.
This matters for two reasons:
If you are currently enrolled, there is a funding window every term. Every session is a new opportunity.
If you missed the last window, the next opportunity is just one term away — not twelve months.
When Does the FLA Funding Window Open?
Here is the honest answer: there is no fixed public date.
The Government of Alberta allocates FLA funds on a per-term basis. According to the official NAIT documentation, registration for Foundational Learning Assistance opens approximately 10 to 12 weeks before term start.
But the exact date the window opens — the day the invitation emails go out — is not announced in advance. There is no countdown on a website. No post on social media. No warning email sent to all eligible students the day before.
The invitation email is the only signal. And it arrives without notice.
What we know from real session data:
- The funding window lasts approximately 48 hours from open to close
- All available spots are typically claimed within 6 hours — even though the official deadline is further away
- The window can open any business day within that 10–12 week window before term start
This means that simply knowing “the window opens sometime in the next few weeks” is not enough. You need to be ready to respond within minutes — not hours, not days.
The Timeline That Actually Matters
Here is a practical timeline for each term, working backward from term start:
10–12 Weeks Before Term Start
What to do:
- Confirm your enrollment with NAIT Continuing Education
- Ask the funding office to register you in the Government of Alberta’s Student Management System
- This is what makes you eligible to receive the invitation email
Why it matters: The earlier you are registered in the system, the earlier you become eligible to receive the invitation. Students who register late may receive their invitation after continuing students have already claimed the available funds.
Before the Window Opens — Always
What to do:
- Create and verify your Alberta.ca Account if you have not already done so
- The verification process takes up to 10 days
- Have your Alberta Student Number (ASN), Social Insurance Number (SIN), and direct deposit banking information ready
Why it matters: If you receive the invitation email but have not yet verified your Alberta.ca Account, you cannot submit the application. By the time your account is verified, the funding may already be gone.
The Moment the Window Opens
What needs to happen:
- You need to know about it within minutes
- You need to click the link in your invitation email and submit your application immediately
Why it matters: The average time before all available spots are claimed is 6 hours. Students who respond within the first hour have the best chance. Students who respond the next morning often find nothing left.
The Problem With “Just Checking Your Email”
Most students assume that if they check their email regularly, they will catch the invitation in time. This assumption has cost many eligible students their funding.
Here is why checking email is not enough:
The email can arrive at any time on any business day. If you are in class, at work, asleep, or simply busy when it arrives, you will not see it until later. By then, the window may be closed.
Gmail sorts these emails automatically. Institutional emails from government or school addresses frequently land in Promotions, Updates, or Spam tabs — not in the Primary inbox. If you are not actively monitoring every tab, the email can sit unread for hours.
The email is in English. For many NAIT ESL students whose first language is not English, a formal government email does not immediately register as urgent. The time spent reading, understanding, and acting on it can be enough to miss the window.
How to Be Ready for Every Session — The Right Setup
Step 1 — Create Your Alberta.ca Account Now
Do not wait until the window opens. Create your verified Alberta.ca Account today. It takes up to 10 days to verify. This is a one-time setup that applies to all future sessions.
Step 2 — Confirm Your Enrollment With NAIT Each Term
At the start of each new term, confirm with NAIT’s Continuing Education funding office that you are registered in the Government of Alberta’s Student Management System. Do not assume it carried over automatically from the previous term.
Step 3 — Activate FundingNotify
This is the only solution that addresses the core timing problem.
FundingNotify is an independent alert service built specifically for NAIT ESL and Academic Upgrading students. Once set up, it monitors your Gmail inbox for the NAIT funding email and alerts you the moment it arrives — with a phone call and an SMS containing the direct link to apply.
The setup takes 2 minutes and is done once:
- Sign up at fundingnotify.ca
- Set up one Gmail forwarding rule: forward emails from
@nait.catomonitoring@fundingnotify.caA video guide walks you through this step after signup.
After that, every term, for every session — Fall, Winter, and Spring — FundingNotify is watching. You do not need to repeat the setup. You do not need to remember to check for the funding email. Your phone will ring.
When the window opens:
- ✅ Your phone rings immediately
- ✅ You receive an SMS with the direct link to apply
- ✅ If you do not answer, a second reminder call fires automatically 5 minutes later
FundingNotify is not affiliated with NAIT. It is an independent service designed and operated in Edmonton, Alberta.
What If You Already Missed a Session?
If you missed the Fall or Winter funding window, here is what to do right now:
1. Stay enrolled in your program. Missing the funding does not mean missing your education. Many students continue their studies out of pocket for one term while preparing for the next window.
2. Confirm your registration for the next term’s funding. Contact NAIT Continuing Education and confirm you are in the system for the upcoming term’s FLA process.
3. Create your Alberta.ca Account if you have not done so. Do this immediately — remember it takes up to 10 days.
4. Activate FundingNotify before the next window opens. The Spring 2026 session is currently live. Fall 2026 will follow. The setup is done once and covers every future session automatically.
Quick Reference — What to Do Each Term
| Timing | Action |
|---|---|
| As soon as you enroll | Create your Alberta.ca Account (up to 10 days to verify) |
| 10–12 weeks before term | Confirm enrollment with NAIT Continuing Education funding office |
| Before any window opens | Activate FundingNotify — set up Gmail forwarding rule once |
| When your phone rings | Open the SMS, click the link, apply immediately |
The Bottom Line
There are 3 FLA funding sessions per year at NAIT. Each one is an opportunity. Each one has a window that lasts about 48 hours — with spots gone in as little as 6 hours.
The students who get funded are not the ones who know the most about the program. They are the ones who act first. And acting first means being alerted first.
